I can’t really say that this game is particularly good. The systems are all relatively shallow, the world-building superficial, and the RNG so violent that the only options seem to be save-scumming or using a wiki to always see what’s ahead.
But even if it isn’t good, it is nice. It’s like cozying up to a nice fire with a cup of tea in your hand. The fairy-tale setting and simple resolution of all plot points give the game a childish innocence that is also reflected in its art style. The mechanics are far from taxing, but not completely brain-dead either. A light handed use of quick-save/load allows the game to be explored nicely, and doesn’t kill the tension too much as long as you have the discipline to not over exploit it to make every 2.8% roll go your way.
While there are good things about the game (i like the writing), but I think it simply doesn’t work as a video game. The problem is that in table top (that this game originates from) you can always return to anywhere you want (just flip the book back or re-roll your dice), but with video game you are to manage save games… And because of how encounters are designed in the game, it is just constant save and load for you.
For me the last straw was losing 3 stamina (out of 12, very substantial) PERMANENTLY by taking a paid boat ride. Like why??? Seriously this is just ridiculous: you can be caught by horde of nomads, raped and humiliated to lose some temporary HP, but you then you take a boat ride between two neighboring big cities… and irreverrsibly ruin you character.
