I was skeptical about this DLC going in because I wasn’t a big fan of disasters in other city simulators, but I’ve actually been pleasantly surprised and it has changed the way my games play out – especially the midgame.
Most of the disasters aren’t cataclysmic. Thunderstorms start fires and take out power lines, forest fires often don’t even target near your city, sinkholes are rather small, meteors are pretty cool, but generally not massively destructive. The dangerous ones are the earthquakes, tornadoes, and tsunamis, with the latter potentially devastating if you overbuilt on a coastal floodplain.
For players running in simulation mode, once you hit the University/High Density milestone unlock and buildings start upgrading to level 4 and beyond, the game gets substantially easier. The early game cash crunch goes away and it becomes purely about growth, land value, services, and traffic management, but all of those can be handled with enough time, which means the novelty of building on a new map begins to wear off. Disaster strikes can change that up, breaking up the monotomy, reshaping stale neighborhoods, and adding the occasional challenge.
Sinkhole in the residential district? Hook up a fresh water drain and turn it into a neighborhood pond. Earthquake open up a tear in town? With the Parklife DLC you can turn it into a memorial park and add walking paths around and over the fissure. Not sure what to do with all your money?
