It’s was a satisfying enough time sink at first but my god the UI is atrocious and unintuitive. It’s developed for being played with a mouse only, which means there’s no reason the interface accessibility should be as much of a pain as it is. If I didn’t know better I would think that this is still in early access or at the very least still waiting to get QoL updates. But I guess this is it.
This was a positive review originally. 18 hours later and 2/3 of the game complete and I’m pretty sure I’ve seen everything it has to offer. All upgrades are just the same upgrades I’ve already unlocked and none of them are particularly interesting, enemies don’t get any less annoying or even any harder for that matter, so that means you’re grinding just for the ability to continue grinding. I liked To the Core better.
The game honestly goes on a little too long. They could have cut the entire 3rd galaxy and the game been just fine to me, the game starts feeling a little long in the tooth around the start of the 3rd galaxy. at least 35 of my nearly 60 hours was in the 3rd galaxy. Also whoever on the dev team decided what you go through on the planet Apollo needed to be a thing. There’s a special place in hell for you, you know what you did.
On the positive side, the game has a good progression cycle that makes you bounce back between each of its aspects to progress effective and well. This constant changing of where you need to focus makes the game feel less grindy than it is, and you only start feeling the grind as you start to complete aspects and have less to focus on (when you’re down to just leveling crew exp, you feel like you wanna try dying).
While I find it charming and feels like a “complete” game (something taken for granted these days), i didn’t really like it. The The gameplay loops feels repetitive and the unlocks are not terribly exciting. Drilling is not very strategic. Features like HQ rooms are a wasted potential. For instance, they could have increase the variety of what room upgrades do, rather than just a cash multiplier. Might be somewhat fun on mobile but I wouldn’t want to spend PC gaming time on this.
