This is a pixel hunting “find the key” adventure game. 1000 locked doors, click on everything in sight, miss the one thing you need to progress, go back through all over again and click on everything in the entire world until you find the one key. Open the one door, gain access to more rooms and more locked doors. Keep clicking on everything in sight and hope you find the next key. In the first 90 minutes I did not encounter a single puzzle, just locked doors. I love the art, the music, and the general vibe, but the gameplay reduces it all to walking back and forth in a large environment, mashing the interact button hoping to find the one thing. I think Elsewhere Experience has crafted something quite remarkable here. Benoît Dereau, a level architect on Arkane’s original Dishonored, co-heads the studio’s first effort: an amalgamation of survival horror’s fixed camera angles, the intuitive puzzle design of point-and-click adventure games and fast-paced combat not unlike Remedy’s Alan Wake. Broken Pieces isn’t entirely successful, however. I did encounter some visual bugs in an otherwise gorgeous looking game that competes quite well against larger titles, and I was a bit unhappy to have Elise blurt out the solution to a puzzle; additionally, while some reviews complain about the overall ambiguity of the game’s plot, I would have actually preferred a bit more, to be honest.
