I am going to recommend this simply because it worked out of the box, which it turns out is basically a miracle with VR flight sims. After spending an afternoon trawling through my backlog of VR flight sim type games, almost every single one had some fundamental, game-breaking flaw, usually do with non-functional input settings, problems getting VR itself to work, or just broken design decisions.
It’s remarkable that out of all of them, the only one that worked out of the box with no problems and I just spent time flying and having fun with was also the only free and open source one: Fly Dangerous. The flight model is a little tough to get used to, and the boosting mechanic is a little bit janky. I’m not a huge fan of being subject to the whims of the booster’s cooldown timer, but it was engaging enough that I spent some time to get a bunch of gold medals.
Anyway, it’s free, not very demanding on your system and the environments are actually quite beautiful. I’m sure you could do a lot more with the basic framework here, especially since it also incorporates a procedural world generator.
