Post-game emptiness sucks. Replayability via an empire mode would solve that neatly. I really liked the mods/equipment options in AoW PF, could turn a first tier experienced unit into a contender against late tier units, or change your laser army from high DPS to crowd control status effect units in one equipment change. In this game experience is king. A high level unit has far FAR more HP and damage potential than a starting unit.
I love how each layer of strategy all compliment and play off of each other. The “macro” strategy of exploration, resource gathering, map control, magic research, and unit creation all directly affects your “micro” strategy of your units, items, and abilities within a tactical combat encounter. And your skill within the tactical combat encounters directly affects your ability to capture economic resources or control points for use in your “macro” strategy. And because of the variety of these gameplay mechanics, it never gets old after many hours. Every race and class also have their own advantages and disadvantages, and so experimenting with those many combinations and how they work with your style of gameplay really increases its replayability.
