Venture Kid is a retro run’n’gun platformer summoned from the era of NES classics, more specifically of Mega Man. An homage to Rockman in the purest, most accurate of ways from the sprites down the very sound effects.
The game follows a linear order, so no fancy stage selection or boss menu here, but it more than makes up for it with a fantastically diverse set of locales. The overall design of levels in general just flows so well and with so many unique tricks, traps and gimmicks in each stage (yes just like, you guessed it, Mega Man). Venture Kid features a difficulty I would call ‘just right’, though for die-hard Megaman veterans it may be on the easier side of things due to a more or less constantly forward pushing pace. Overall, its very accessible for this kind of game while retaining the challenging and memory driven patterns of bosses that its influence had. Visually there’s all kinds of nostalgic nods to the diverse era of the golden age of console gaming, and not just for Mega Man.
