The story in Tokyo Dark starts with detective Itō Ayami, sent to investigate the disappearance of her partner, who went missing, while on a case. Throughout the story, the reader quickly finds, that there is something more than the ordinary criminal investigation – something dark, sank deep beneath the Tokyo streets. Something involving an ancient cult and a relic and… I guess the rest is up to you to uncover.
Despite the interesting premise, for me, the story itself lacks depth and is in a way overshadowed by other substories and scenes, which scenes and stories are not better, but do take the momentum of the main narrative. They could have been developed to better support the main story, but alas. Or I guess that’s just me not seeing the potential of the novel.
Visually the game looks great. The full animated scenes and especially the main character animated appearance, as well as some of the background animations make this novel look very alive and visually pleasing, unlike other visual novels. The background of the different locations perfectly sets the mood and the atmosphere in the story – from the lightning and flashing images of the creepy scenes and dark areas, to the colorful and full motion scenery of other districts of the city.
As I already said – Tokyo Dark is a really enjoyable game, with relatively interesting and short story (took me about 8 hours, although I took my time with the dialogues, so maybe even less for you), but nothing amazing. Visuals really earn the first place trophy here and sadly – the story takes the second place. For that price there are many other great visual novels (far better than this one), some of which even cheaper. Of course you will definitely enjoy Tokyo Dark, but maybe buy with a heavy discount and save your money for something else.
