The game is not good, yet I really enjoyed my time with Rake. I found out about this game years ago and have wanted to play it ever since. Finally getting around to playing Rake on Halloween, it’s little more than a Unity pet project (bugs and all) which occasionally makes your hair stand up. Graphics and sound won’t blow you away, but somehow Rake pulls off a creepy atmosphere, leading to a tense game of cat and mouse at night time.
You have a set number of nights to kill the creature before the game ends abruptly, with little more than a message at the top of the screen “You lose”. This caused me to soft lock my game, forcing me to start over because I hadn’t damaged him enough on previous nights to kill him on the final night.
Unbeknownst to you, if you are in a certain radius of the creature it will sprint full speed at you, over any hill, through any tree and most objects. This all occurs outside of your audio range, meaning it will see you and sprint at you full speed making no noise until it’s pretty close. Oftentimes the creature will jump you from dense brush and you have no chance to react. The game features several scripted events where the Rake appears and damages you, control is taken away from the player during these events. These attacks occur separately from the actual creature you are hunting. Twice I was hunting the Rake and triggered a scripted event at the same time, resulting in two of them attacking at the same time. Some events are just audio triggers to scare you.
