Most of the negative reviews, originate from folks that couldn’t figure out they needed the Alpha version for the map to work. So put as much into those reviews as you wish. I am just wondering how cheap do you guys expect these maps to be? Those good ol days of $5-$15 mods are gone, unless of course there is a sale on the presently $50 DCS mods. These things take a helluva lot of time and patience to build, I don’t have any problem paying $40 for a map where I can fly through my hometown, buzz the lake, and haul ass along the river trying not to smash into Hoover Damn. You guys need to go be critics at places where perfection is the promise and practice, maybe then you won’t be so damn disappointed.
First off let me start by saying I have a lower end computer (HP envy laptop), and I’ve downloaded all the maps. This is the map that is the most stable on my computer and also the most beautiful in my opinion. I can run this on medium/high settings and get the best fpm and yet it still looks more detailed/the most realistic than any of the other maps I’ve downloaded so far. Syria looks breathtaking when I see pictures and videos online, but I can only run it on ultra low settings and I get horrible fpm and it just doesn’t match up (or any of the maps) when it comes to the computer I can run this map on.
So basically all I’m saying is, if you don’t have a higher end gaming computer, give this one a shot. I have not been disappointed at all. I highly recommend. Graphics are especially amazing when you get to the flight levels!! Lastly, I’ve seen some comments that the map is too small…I personally don’t think so unless you’re planning on flying a mission that is 2 hours long/plan on flying a couple hundred miles. I have to say I’m pleasantly surprised at this map. I didn’t think they’d get too much right modeling the entire NTTR, but I was wrong. I booted up the first little instant action dogfight with F-5 Aggressors and after my first two kills I found myself deep in the Sally Corridor. Hit F10. “Neat, they have all the airspaces.” Started heading 270 to land at Creech just to check out the airport. Skirted the box (didn’t want to piss off them Dreamland boys) and started heading south through 64 Alpha, Bravo and Charlie. Looked dead. No Flying Doritos, Reapers or Preds. Must’ve been a down day. Weird sense of deja vu hit me. I was navigating the valley north of Creech using landmarks I personally knew, but my viewpoint was reversed. Instead of waiting for a plane to pop up on radar from the north, I WAS popping up on radar to the north. A cacophony of memories and information rolled through my head faster than a Team America montage. “I did not need to remember the radial and DME for Arcoe/Apex, thank you very much.” My existential crisis abated.
So, it’s true, they got the NTTR down pat. Tonopah, Creech and Nellis airports are very realistic (can’t speak for Dreamland, never been there). The devs worked friggin’ hard on this, it shows. Is it worth your money, though? For me, yes. I don’t live in NV anymore and it’s quaint flying over the ol’ stomping grounds. How about your average John Q McSimmer? If they know what Red Flag is, then I’d say definitely. For $50 bucks, though? Ehhhh, it probably deserves to be more than $50, but I’d say wait for at least a half-off sale and pay $25. That’s like 2.5 lunches. You can brown bag it for at least that long.
