The main objective of the game is to survive. The game featured a dynamic environment.  The players can also search for the resources that were left behind by the past explorations. The leftover of ancient ships and crashed planes can be discovered. However the deadly marine life can put the player in danger. There are two general play styles in the game. Beam Team games are looking at incorporating co-op and multiplayer modes into  the game. The game supports Linux under features, however it is not sure that when the Linux version will be available to the public in market. The players will have to try their best to settle on an island. They can build shelters  to keep themselves save from the environmental hazards.

The game, while showing some potential, is more than flawed. The combat is unresponsive and unfair, gameplay is barebones, lacks fun milestones or ways of significantly changing what you do(Throughout the game you gather the same resources, loot the same places and craft the same stuff, without real improvements or changes to the gameplay loop). Crafting, while present, is no fun. New structures do not advance your progress by any meaningful degree, you can’t customize your raft and there is no incentive to progress to the “higher tiers” of buildings.

The fact that you can’t build any of the production stations on your vessel, yet the game requires constant island-hopping to gather new resources feels just wrong. The islands lack variation and seem to be always based on one of two blueprints you quickly learn to identify. The fact that you can tell what the resources, enemies and layout of every island is gonna be, before even setting a foot on shore kills any fun exploration might bring. The “story” adds 3 bosses but in combination with the unbelievably flawed combat system makes you dread every single encounter.

And for every technical problem that the game has, the multiplayer makes it 10 times worse. It has everything: Absurd long loading times on high end systems, random disconnects, bugs, synchronization issues. The game needs work. At times you can see the potential: General Gameplay idea, Nice graphic effects, the water behavior, atmosphere during thunderstorms, yet all of that pales in comparison to the issues.

I really hate that I have to leave a negative review for this game since I’ve been a fan for a really long time, but it just isn’t anywhere near finished. There is a staggering amount of bugs, even more so in multiplayer, that just make the game unplayable sometimes. Fallen trees will launch items into the ocean, rafts will suddenly flip, sink, or just stop working in general. I’ve had an experience where a boss died under my raft and made it completely unusable, so I had to quit without saving and lost a bunch of progress.

The frame rate will randomly drop for no reason, multiplayer sometimes has atrocious sync errors (rafts will appear in different locations for different people, chests will be empty for one person and full for another), in co-op the other player will sometimes just randomly disconnect for no reason (at one point we figured out one of the causes was manually dragging our raft), and when trying to reconnect, the load time is abysmal (5-10 minutes).

Expounding on the inventory issue a bit: it’s too large to feel realistic (even ignoring the issue of “where’d you get that backpack?”), but so small it’s annoying. It suffers from the Pokemon inventory meme of “I can’t fit 1 small Item, but because I have this other large item, I can fit three more”. Huge issue there. Now, you can craft items to wear that increase your hotbar, which is interesting, but I’m not really a fan. There’s also no weight mechanic implemented, so you can just fill your inventory with logs no problem. Given the size of the logs… yeah… honestly probably not happening.

From a design perspective, it’s not the worst progression… but it’s also not good. There’s some high-tier goals, and some low-tier goals, and it feels like a decent pacing. Unfortunately, there’s not a lot of mid-game content. You get the basics handled, then it’s grinding for the high-end stuff. And when you get there you avoid probably the best mechanic in the game: ocean travel.
