A rogue-lite FPS that combines the best of both genres and dials the result up to 11. If the graphics hold you back from trying it out, there’s not much I can say that will sway your opinion I guess (even though also that aspect is way more intricate than you might think). The FPS part is fast, satisfying and full of mechanics that come naturally and are immensely enjoyable. The rogue-lite aspect is unpunishing and brilliantly realized. And don’t get me started on meta-stories and meta-games. There is way more to discover in this game than you’d expect.
Speaking of things not to get me started on, the sound design is top-notch and the soundtrack by Andrew Hulshult is… well, when you know, you know. This man can do no wrong. There’s a demo, so you don’t have to shell out your coin on my word alone – and if the price seems steep to you for an indie retro-FPS (we’re just spoiled that way), apart from it being on sale really often, it’s also got a hell of a lot of content and is definitely worth every cent.
I’m not sure if it’s the procedural generated levels or the broken ways in which you traverse them, but I found myself hoping that it would be over as soon as possible. I feel like all of the little nuances that make this game “quaint” end up adding hours of tedium. Talking specifically about the 8 bit mini games for your character upgrades, and the “complexity” of the treasure hunting puzzles. You can turn them off by the grace of god.
I would say if your able to get this game dirt cheap and enjoy the first few parts – or even the first chapter – you’ll like this game. But if you’re like me and you LOVE a majority of the retro shooters on steam and you’re just not sure – stay away. This game was just straight up not for me.
