Game Overview:

A decrepit orphanage known as Playcare sits beneath the once magical toy factory. You must make your way through this haunted place, solving new puzzles and avoiding the nightmares that lurk within the dark. Answers lie between the blood-stained bedsheets and screaming echoes… If you can survive. The game looks and sounds incredible, easily their best work yet on display here. There’s a areas that needed more contrast, and sometimes the environments are too cluttered for their own good. But the music and atmosphere was of the highest quality. The scares in this one are also pretty good. Unlike the series it undoubtedly spawned from, Poppy is unafraid to make a game that shows a bit of blood, and has the guts to be scary. The puzzles are much more prevalent in this one than in the last two, and I for one welcome it. I’ve seen a few complaints that there’s too many puzzles, and I just can’t agree. No bugs! At least from my playthrough, I experienced no bugs outside of some visual ones during the boss fight which I’ll talk about later in the review. Well firstly, the game’s just too dark at times.

Even when I had adjusted my gamma and brightness I still struggled to see where I was going or what I was looking at a couple of times. The gas mask’s overlay didn’t help either, there’s one puzzle in particular that I just had to click around in the dark for until I got the solution. Second, the boss fight is horribly balanced. I was enjoying the game up until this point but replaying this segment over and over really took the wind out of my sails and left me sour to the whole experience. It’s a bit unclear how you start the fight, you basically mess around in the room until it activates, there’s also the tutorial on the green TV screen instead of Ollie calling you which would’ve delivered the information to the player much easier. You’re told to use your flare gun to get rid of the fake Catnaps but with how quickly they move on the later minutes of the fight its more worth your while to just use the steam.
