I think Elsewhere Experience has crafted something quite remarkable here. Benoît Dereau, a level architect on Arkane’s original Dishonored, co-heads the studio’s first effort: an amalgamation of survival horror’s fixed camera angles, the intuitive puzzle design of point-and-click adventure games and fast-paced combat not unlike Remedy’s Alan Wake. I am especially fond of the game’s interchangeable weather system, which is a welcome layer of surrealism that adds variety to puzzles and level design.
Broken Pieces isn’t entirely successful, however. I did encounter some visual bugs in an otherwise gorgeous looking game that competes quite well against larger titles, and I was a bit unhappy to have Elise blurt out the solution to a puzzle; additionally, while some reviews complain about the overall ambiguity of the game’s plot, I would have actually preferred a bit more, to be honest. Some of the otherworldly sights on display in this game are stunning, often resembling paintings in texture and atmosphere, so I found a bit of that upended when the game shed light on some of its inner workings, though I understand it may not have been the intent of its developers to obscure every aspect of Broken Pieces’ narrative.
Above all I am eager to see what Elsewhere does in the future, whatever that may be. This is more of a puzzle type game with some really bad combat. The combat is so clunky it’s better to just turn it down to explore mode where combat will be less frequent and easier. You are also limited with how much you can explore as the game forces you to go back to your safe house as night falls to either avoid enemies or to read files to let you advance the story. This was okay at first but gets highly annoying later in the game when you are far away from your house and it takes you a couple of hours of in game time to return. Graphically the game looks decent and has quite a few locations to visit and revisit as you progress. The voice acting was good and probably the games strongest thing going for it. While this isn’t a bad game, it could have used more time to iron out some things like it’s terrible combat and clunky character movements. The story could use some fleshing out as well.
