There is not really any clear narrative until near the end when the war is coming to a close. The characters are not very memorable and the dialogue options are meaningless. There are several sidequests and dialogue trees in this game but they pretty much do nothing and have no narrative consequence. None have any impact on characterization or the ending and you can really just do all the main line missions if you want to and miss absolutely nothing in importance.
