Overview NIGHT/SHADE You’re The Drug:

IGHT/SHADE is an 18+ visual novel about overcoming the toxicity within interpersonal relationships as well as within oneself. This character driven plot explores the complexities of love and loss in the form of a romantic thriller through the eyes of our main character, Sasha, while he navigates life’s darker elements and tries not to get caught in the crossfire of two ruthless crime syndicates. Surprisingly, there is also a rather rich story with lore. At first glance, I rolled my eyes at the heavy-handed, done to death “RELIGIONS ARE EVIL!!!! CORPORATIONS ARE DESTROYING THE ENVIRONMENT!!!” plot, but there are some really nice plot twists and character moments. Now, as someone who teaches English, maybe I’m a bit more sensitive to this, but it was clear that someone who doesn’t speak English natively wrote this. It’s fine for what it is,

but the script could’ve used a once over to cut-down on long-winded dialog and awkward, unclear phrasing. But again, I don’t think most people will notice that. I went in thinking I would hate the story, but I ended up really liking the world it created and wanting more answers. To me, that alone is reason enough to fondly remember this game for many years to come. Gameplay-wise it didn’t do anything unique or special from my perspective, but it offered variety and was fun enough to keep me engaged. Worth noting is that my standards on what makes a noteworthy game mechanic are pretty niche, so when I say “it doesn’t do anything unique or special”, that doesn’t mean you won’t have a great time with it. Just don’t expect major innovations for interactive story telling, that’s just not what the game is trying to do.
