Tons of lore in this game. I’m pretty sure some of it harkens back to previous Xanadu and probably Dragonslayer games, but I don’t know how much is new for the setup of this game vs actual events from prior ones. NPC dialogue does update after each story beat, but there’s only like 20 NPCs max in the game and they’re nothing too special. Still nice that they’re there though. The music goes for a much more forlorn and sometimes even creepy approach, but what’s there is certainly good. No anime art style here, although you can see the vaguest hint of it in a couple character designs.
A potential sticking point for some players might be the block puzzles. There’s only about a dozen of them in the whole game, I’d say, and a few of those are optional. Some are easy, but they can get pretty dang hard. I had to look up one, because I didnt realize the game was expecting me to also jump as part of the solution, but I solved all the harder ones myself.
Overall it gives off the vibes of a general PS2-era, mid-to-low budget game. It’s not going to leave you floored, but the execution punches a bit above that expected mark, and I’m glad I checked it out. It was a decent amount of fun in a more old school type of way that didn’t lack many QoL we expect these days. Also it’s noteworthy for being the final game to date Falcom has released in the storied Dragonslayer universe (that wasn’t a rerelease or some such). I’d say it’s worth a pickup on sale for sure.
