Xanadu Next is the most unique Falcom game in the past two-odd decades. (I should know, I’ve played all the English ones on Steam now besides 1.) If I had to sum it up with broad strokes, it’s like a mashup between Ys, Baldur’s Gate Dark Alliance, and a Souls game (insert meme here). Ys because of the mostly linear progression where key items or gear grant abilities to advance, while still allowing for plenty of cross-exploring and secrets. Dark Alliance, it’s been 2 decades since I played so I’m really fuzzy—but it’s probably the camera perspective, general graphical style, smashing barrels and ♥♥♥♥, and maybe even the attacks and spells that make me think of it. Souls because of the slower more methodical combat where you bait out an attack and then circle around behind to respond, are mostly moving through ruins of the past, and unlock shortcuts back to the central area as you weave your way through.
It’s more of a thematic feel for the Souls comparison though; it’s certainly not a difficult game, there’s no dodging, and heck it came out years before Demon Souls even. The combat is slower paced than any other action rpgs I’ve played from Falcom. It’s fleshed out enough overall to work. You allocate each stat point you get from levelup, and your stats will determine what gear you can equip.
