I’d say the prevailing problem I have with this game is that the picross puzzles and the visual novel elements don’t compliment each other at all. As you go through the visual novel sections you’ll basically yoinked out of that experience to play a different game. It makes the visual novel sections feel like they drag more than they actually do and makes the puzzles feel more like a chore than anything else.
I ESPECIALLY recommend this because you can get better picross puzzles AND visual novels. The story is certainly not awful, on a good day I wouldn’t even call it bad. But there’s too many characters that are either just outright unlikable or take too long to warm up to you (not SCOUT though, he’s a silly little robot, he’s categorically impossible to dislike). The story also does nothing to make its murder mysteries exciting. I find myself asking, “where’s the locked room mysteries, the exciting turnabouts?” Piecing together the facts should feel exciting but because the process and circumstances are generally just boring, for the lack of a better word, resolving the cases leaves me feeling lukewarm.
As for the picross puzzles, I felt like most of them give too little leads to be fun to solve. I found myself looking at even 10×10 puzzles and going “not this ♥♥♥♥ again” when there were no free lines or even just any numbers greater than 5 to help me get started. It makes for a process where finding clues in these puzzles makes me go “♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ finally” rather than “nice” because it’s all so painstaking; it just goes against the casual puzzling that I like in picross puzzles.
