Legend of Grimrock is far from perfect but if it helps revitalize the dungeon crawler genre, so be it. I’ll give it a thumbs up that is not entirely heartfelt. First of all, the RPG mechanics are limited at best. I dislike the linear progression of skills and was really disapointed to discover that, even by putting all my skill points into two skills only, at the end of the game none of them was fully upgraded. I quite liked equipment selection. The variety is not immense but it is good enough to find a reasonable set of inventory for each of the four player characters. I am also a bit lukewarm about puzzles, some of which are really obscure, but this might be a matter of opinion. Exploration and combat are very fine, though, and make up for some of the earlier mentioned qualms. All in all, I wish the game was more RPG-y and less Puzzle-y but I quite like it anyway.
Awesome dungeon crawler. My first foray into the genre. Right at the start, the menu music is fire. Then you get into the game. And wow! One thing this game excels at above all others is atmosphere and ambience. Besides the main menu music, there really isn’t any music in the actual game. Just the ambient sounds of a decrepit dungeon. In fact, it can be downright eerie. I got jumpscared a few times after running into a monster I could barely make out in part of the dungeon. One thing to note is that this game is like 60% puzzles, 20% secret-finding and 20% actual combat. Thankfully, for the most part, unlike other games I’ve tried since in the genre, you should be able to figure out most, if not all, the puzzles on your own ingame. No looking up 40 year old forum posts!
