Back in the early 2000s, shortly after the first Pirates of the Caribbean film made pirates awesome again, the GW hobbyist magazine White Dwarf featured an article with a new army list for an obscure part of Warhammer lore called the Vampire Coast. The article introduced its readers to Arch Commodore Luthor Harkon (or at least it fleshed out his backstory for the first time) and his silly, pirate-y realm on the shores of Lustria. The army list was small, gimmicky, and not very competitive (like, at all), but it was definitely one of the more fun and memorable army lists White Dwarf put out.
Then in 2011, GW released a board game called Dreadfleet. While the game itself was “meh” (though the ship models were FRIGGIN’ AMAZING) and it had no connection to the Vampire Coast, it did give us more undead pirate-y goodness. The main villian was Count Noctilus, a vampire pirate who was almost on par with Nagash in terms of magical power. We also met a human pirate named Aranessa Saltspite, a mutant Norscan pirate who hated Noctilus and had a special connection to Manann, the main human sea god of Warhammer.
