Great style, great art, weak gameplay and general lack of ‘wow’ moments. We’ve got a million roguelikes already and the least I’d hope for is something kinetic, impactful and rewarding for me taking the time and money to learn a system and get into it.
I’ve gotten to watch this game develop through beta and early access, and it’s become a solid game that’s a blast to play. The art style is a fantastic callback to cartoons of the 80s, and there are a lot of small details that show the amount of care and dedication the team has put into the game.
The combat doesn’t feel slow or clunky at all, contrary to what some reviews are claiming. Rather, the feel is much more deliberate and tactical than other horde games, allowing you to time your strikes and pick your shots. The only way to play with friends was to spam quick match enough times that we eventually find one another as I can’t really crossplay between steam and epic. Substance feels as deep as the inspiration it heavily lifts from with Saturday morning cartoons, which it does without necessarily elevating, progressing, or even effectively satirizing the notion of, it merely feels like another mediocre fantasy without any backbone, grit, or passion. Except for the art and sound, 10/10 to those guys.
