I give this one a mildly enthusiastic recommendation after more or less finishing a couple campaigns (Macedonia/Hibernia). In short this can be considered a more basic Paradox GSG that uses a WEGO turn based system and features playable tactical battles if you own FoG2. “Basic” is not used as an insult here; it’s quite the opposite, actually. FoG:E is refreshingly light on modifier stacking and heavier on tactics and telling a story of the rise and fall of civilizations in the classical world, with endless potential for generating great stories in multiplayer if you have a few friends that are into it. The result is a game that plays a lot more like a board game than a simulator, which I personally love, but YMMV.
The areas that are clearly inspired by Paradox games such as a similar UI layout with various overlays for population/supply/revolt risk, diplomatic options that include forming and absorbing client states, a vast array of playable factions that range from pathetic to unstoppable at the start date, and national decisions, are far less interesting than the areas where FoGE chooses to diverge, and that’s where things become more of a mixed bag, though the good definitely outweighs the bad.
WEGO is king. This is definitely subjective, but having all turns process simultaneously just seems to encourage more tactical thinking, and the AI does a fairly good job of exploiting bad moves, using regional edicts when it benefits them during war, and not taking stupid fights. It does seem to have some issues pushing its advantage completely. Rome is a good example, as they don’t seem to like to push into alpine regions, maybe due to supply or legion debuffs in mountains, leading to strange instances of them being at war with the Boii for fifty years when they could easily wipe them out.
