Demon Slayer Midnight Sun takes most of its inspiration from Phasmophobia, while also trying to do things a little differently. While Phasmophobia is a more “realistic” take on ghost hunting, Demonologist strives to be more of a “funhouse”. The graphics are top notch and really compliment the art style. There’s a kind of vintage, almost steampunky vibe to the game which works well and adds to the horror atmosphere. It feels like a game designed by artists. There are a ton of unique events (visual and audio scares) in each map that will take you by surprise, but they are triggered too frequently and you’ll get used to them.
The events can also trigger anytime and the ghost does not need to be nearby, which is unfortunate as it makes it feel less like the ghost is trying to scare you, and more that the game is just showing off its effects. The performance is great, with quick load times and no game breaking bugs or glitches. The audio design can be hit or miss sometimes, but overall it’s acceptable. The biggest downside to the game in its current state is that the gameplay loop is repetitive. There’s currently no hiding from the ghost, so when a hunt starts you’ll tend to just run to the opposite side of the house and kite it around in a circle. Most of the time there’s no real threat unless it hunts right next to you and instakills you at the start, which is very unfair.
