A rhythm game and a roguelike dungeon crawler mashed into one, Crypt of the Necrodancer gets you moving to the beat all the while increasingly difficult enemies get thrown at your face. Understanding the relatively simple mechanics and enemy patterns can only get you so far – just wait until there are 5 or 6 enemies coming at you all at once in a cramped space, and oh, let’s add a miniboss to the mix? The difficulty does spike as you progress through each zone, and it spikes fast. You’ll be dying many times over, but holy f*ck the satisfaction you feel when you reach the end is well worth the pain. Every enemy (except bats) moves in a predefined pattern that triggers on the beat of the songs (which are all super catchy btw). So you KNOW what they’re going to do, and when you inevitably die you’ll find yourself saying “man I know I can do that right next time”. Beating all four worlds back to back with Cadence (nowhere close to the hardest achievement) is one of my proudest moments.
