So, Bubble Bobble 4 Friends. I’m a fairly big Taito fan, so I was quite glad to see this game come to be back when they first announced it, even if I had my qualms (and still do, kinda) with it. I’ve played this game on Switch, so most of my playtime is on there, so keep that in mind. Despite what people are saying in the reviews, I think the updated mode (the main event, really) is a fine update to the original, and better in some ways. Sure, it’s no Bubble Symphony, but I think people are a little too harsh on it. The people ragging on this clearly haven’t played the Bubble Bobble games from the 2000’s. It clearly deviates from the original arcade gameplay, but it’s probably to it’s benefit here as it’s more of a home-based rodeo more than anything. What it goes for is more puzzle-based platforming than the original, and while the original certainly had that too, this ramps it up. While it’s also clearly easier than the original, I found the difficulty to be just right, and if you want harder, there’s not one, but two sets of hard stages you can get through (one being added as free DLC originally for the Switch version, The Baron is Back), and I’d argue that’s a lot of the meat of the game. Both will take quite a bit of time to get through and will test your patience, but it’s very much worth it if you’re into the harder arcade games of yore. And yes, play this all with up to 4 players, but it’s local only. Admittedly I don’t care too much about it not having an online mode, but that’s also a valid complaint, even if I don’t agree with the people saying “NO ONLINE MODE = NO BUY”.
