When discounted, you can ignore 98% of the negative reviews. A lot of the criticism is with premium pricing (for good reason). But at 15 dollars for the whole bundle it’s insanely good fun IF you aren’t expecting a good versus mode, otherwise play L4D. If this game were just released today at like 20 bucks for everything it would be glowing reviews. But the devs botched the release with bad pricing/marketing. Since gamers are generally boring/bored people they need a little drama to spice their lives up, and B4B was the obvious meme target for reasons you’re probably already aware of.
The game also barely works on the Steam Deck. Cutscenes start to stutter a ton after being completely fine for about 30 seconds and I have no idea why (Steam Deck oled model, fresh game install without changing video settings). Adding to those minor annoyances is the fact that the game is just poorly priced. Games like Destiny 2 with a gigantic playerbase might be able to price their add-ons pretty high, but I don’t see myself convincing even a single friend to buy the game for 60€, let alone for 100€ for the ultimate edition. Left 4 Dead 2 is way cheaper, and so is Deep Rock Galactic (haven’t played it yet but I’ve heard tons of good things about it). Did Turtle Rock Studios just forget about what happened to the Evolve playerbase?
Additionally, there’s almost nothing that Back 4 Blood does better than Left 4 Dead. Sure, the graphics look nice, but collecting and equipping cards doesn’t seem that interesting, and simplicity was one of the good things about L4D.
